The diagonal piecework in this coat is a direct reaction to the very perpendicular piecework in Item B31. After the painstaking grid of repurposed happi coat fabrics in the previous piece, I broke the vertical orientation with broad pieces that wrap across the back, right shoulder, and front. This coat design completely ignores the standard geometry in a traditional Japanese happi coat, while still showcasing the bold colors, stripes, and circles that define these festival garments.

The over-dyed linen lining has two interior pockets. There are slits on the bottom side seams and ties in the front. The length is 32," the width is 27," and the arms are 25." The dress from has a size 40 chest, and the fit is equivalent to a men's large.
