Item C09
All three panels on this pillow come from an unusual tomesode kimono I deconstructed. It depicted a large landscape cascading across the bottom panels of the garment, and featured a group of three peacocks. Though popular in Chinese art, peacocks are a rare subject in Japanese design.
Two painted peacock fragments from the kimono here frame a central panel featuring a solitary mon, or family crest, of the wearer. A formal black kimono like this is known as a “five mon” kimono for the crests that appear on the front and back of the shoulder line. I was happy to be able to frame one with the quilting.
The insert is feather and down, and the dimensions are 19" x 19."
