Item B39 is part of my Pearl Harbor series of Pacific War Coats, and I made it from a WW2 era US army blanket and a silk Japanese kimono from the same period. Inspired by the rehabilitation warships go through during their service, I reworked an earlier version of this coat, adding under layers, top layers, flaps, fasteners, and edging. On a back panel I burned into the fabric the navy call numbers of the USS California, which was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Six interior and exterior ties allow the front coat panels to be closed in a variety of ways: either left over right (in the Japanese tradition for the living) right over left (according to their tradition for the dead), or meeting in the middle.

The length of the body ranges from 26" to 28," and the sleeves are 24" long. The dress form measures 40 inches around the chest.
