Item C13
The central panel on this throw pillow comes from a very old unlined nagajuban that I disassembled. It would have been worn by a man under a heavier kimono or at home lounging. The choice to stencil images of children and youths at playful leisure is very unusual, as nagajuban usually incorporate symbols of strength and fortitude. The side panels are stenciled with different styles of fencing, latticework, and screens from a traditional Japanese garden.
The back is deadstock waxed cotton twill, and the insert is feather and down. Measurements are 20" x 20."
